History
Ron started the company in 1981, with their first advertisements appearing in 1982 showing their first product, the FP7 diesel locomotive. S-Helper Service, created to support the manufacture of new S-scale products, started collaborating with American Models in 1989. This ended in 1995. The future looked bright when American Models announced in 2017 that they had acquired a new and larger manufacturing facility. Unfortunately, Ron passed away on December 4, 2021. Ron's wife, Karen, announced that the company will continue to operate with the same personnel.

Fred Ertl started the privately-owned company in 1945 in Dubuque, Iowa. In 1959 they moved to Dyersville, Iowa. In 1967 they were bought by Victor Comptometer Corporation. The company was sold in 1977 to Walter Kidde & Company, Inc. In 1992 Fred Ertl retired. In 1999 the company was bought by Racing Champions (diecast vehicles manufacturer), which turned the name into a brand, and renamed themselves to Racing Champions Ertl. This company was re-created under the name RC2 a few years later, and then that company was bought by the Japanese Tomy International in 2011. Round 2 LLC (the company that owns Auto World) received the rights from Tomy International to produce Racing Champions and Ertl brand vehicles starting in 2015.

The store as started by Norman Hatton in 1946. His son Keith and daughter Chriistine took over in 1998 upon Norman's death. Upon Keith's death in 2008, Richard became the majority shareholder. In January 2024, they announced their closure, both of the physical store and their Web site. However, in March 2024, Rails of Sheffield have taken over the brand and are keeping the web site up and running. The physical Hattons store and warehouse are no more.

The company manufactures diecast vehicles that are about 3" long. Some vehicles will scale out close to 1:64, but preferences and judgment will have to be used to see how close they really are to S-scale. The parent company, Simba Dickie Group, also owns the Jada Toys product line (another close-to-S-scale diecast vehicles product line), and the Tamiya brand (plastic kits and paints). In the U.S., Majorette products were mostly sold at Toys-R-Us stores, but since that company went out of business in 2018, they are hard to find locally, and most likely will only be found online.
History
The company was started as Rail-Route in France in 1961, and started producing model vehicles in 1964 under their new name of Majorette. In 1980 they bought Solido, another French diecast manufacturer. Production moved to Thailand in 1987. In 1992, the company declares bankruptcy and they were bought out by Ideal Loisirs, who in turn were taken over by Triumph-Adler in 1996. In 2003, the Majorette and Solido product lines were bought out by the Smoby Group, and the brand name was changed to Smoby Marjorette. In 2007 they declared bankruptcy. In 2010 the asserts were bought by the Simba-Dickie Group out of Germany. In 2015 a tsunami destroyed the company's factory, and they rebuild an ultra modern one. Since 2015, the product line has been completely revised.

Matchbox models are what is known as "box scale". This means that the models themselves are scaled and sized such that they fit inside of an approximately 3-inch long box. This means that some models scale out to near S-scale (1:64), some may be too large, and some may be too small; it all depends on what you enjoy.
History
Matchbox was created by the British company Lesney Products in 1953. The name came from the fact that their shipping boxes were the same size at the boxes in which matches were sold back then. The cars were made out of die-cast metal from the start. The early models were 2" long, but by 1968 they started making the more common 3-inch long models. The company declared bankruptcy in 1982 due to a downturn in the economy, and the Matchbox name and tooling and molds were bought by Universal Toys.
An interesting side story is that one of the co-owners of Lesney Products, Jack Odell, was able to purchase some of the assets of the company and he continued to manufacture the Yesteryear models under the company name Lledo (his last name spelled backwards).
Universal Toys renamed Lesney Products to Matchbox International Ltd. and moved the operations to Macau. In 1984, manufacturing was moved to China under the name of Shanghai Universal Toys Co., Ltd. These models have China stamped on the bottom.
Tyco Toys bought Matchbox in 1992.
Hot Wheels was created by Elliot Handler by his company Mattel, Inc in 1968. In 1997 they bought out Tyco Toys, which owned the Matchbox brand. In general, Hot Wheels are designed to be more toy/hot-rod style cars, while Matchbox tend to be more scale replicas.

History
The company was started in 1966. In 1974, with his brass caster, Jeff Thompson, they came up with the name Railmaster. In 1984 the company started exporting Sn3 kits via Scenery Unlimited. In 1988 they sold Railmaster, with a commitment to not sell any kits in New Zealand for three years thereafter. Railmaster Exports was born to only sell outside New Zealand. For a few years in the 2000s, a company in California, called Railmaster Hobbies, served as the company's U.S. distributor. However, in 2017 John Agnew indicated that Railmaster Hobbies are no longer his U.S. distributor (he now sells direct to customers only; Railmaster Hobbies in California is just a regular hobby shop now).

The company was founded as Tomiyama Toy Seisakusho in 1924, manufacturing toy airplanes. In 1951 they started expanding their toy product lines. In 1960 they expanded their offices into the U.S. and Europe. In the 1970s they opened their first factory in Singapore. The company went public in 1984. In 1988 the company started diversifying its product lines. Takara and Tomy merged in 2006, becoming TOMY Co, Ltd. 2011: RC2 Corporation was bought by Tomy (of Japan). In 2013 Tomy discontinued the Johnny Lightning brand. In 2016 Round 2 LLC, a new company owned by Thomas Lowe, bought the rights to produce the Johnny Lightning brand and started producing models again. Tomy owns Ertl.
