This company manufactures just about anything you need to build a complete S-scale layout. If you are just starting out, or if you are looking to expand your layout, be sure to visit this company's web site, and you might also want to order their catalog.
Ron started the company in 1981, with their first advertisements appearing in 1982 showing their first product, the FP7 diesel locomotive. S-Helper Service, created to support the manufacture of new S-scale products, started collaborating with American Models in 1989. This ended in 1995. The future looked bright when American Models announced in 2017 that they had acquired a new and larger manufacturing facility. Unfortunately, Ron passed away on December 4, 2021. Ron's wife, Karen, announced that the company will continue to operate with the same personnel.

Charles Ro, Sr. started selling Lionel trains out of one of his beauty salons in 1972. His son, Charles Ro, Jr. joined in the 1980s. Seeing the boom in garden railroading, they formed a new company, USA Trains, to create American-prototype G-scale trains.

Track Components: "American S Gauge" code 172 sectional and flex track
Owns the brand name "American S Gauge" a track manufacturing arm of the company. They appear to not respond to attempts at contacting them. Doug Peck (Port Lines Hobby Supply), who stocks some of their items (whatever he has left in his inventory) indicates that he suspects that they are out of business. Either way, Doug is not planning on restocking any items, even if the company returns. The company's web site has a copyright date of 2018 on it.
At some point in its history, the company was bought by the Mescher brothers. One of the brothers passed away in 2021, and it is unclear whether or not the other brother wants to continue the company. The web site's domain name registration was last updated in March 2023, so it seems that they are wanted to keep it.

The store was started in 1983, a brick-n-mortar hobby store that carries all the model railroading scales. The store subsequently bought the following companies: S Scale America (1994), Chesapeake Models (1995), Plano Model Products (1997; S-scale parts only), Microscale Industries (2005; S-scale decals only), Details Associates (2005, S-scale product line only), Pacific Rail Shops (2006), Mullet River Model Works (2015), and Oregon Rail Supply's S-scale signals (year unknown). Note that when Des Plaines Hobbies bought Pacific Rail Shops, they bought the tooling and the name; they did not buy PRS' current inventory, which owners John and Felix Verser continued to sell until gone under their other company name Gold Coast Models. Des Plaines Hobbies releases new S-scale products under their "S Scale America" brand. The best way to describe this is that owner Ron Sebastian used S Scale America as their manufacturing arm. It seems that that arm has effectively stopped when Ron passed away. His son-in-law Matt Gaudinsky has started a new company called Scale America that gathers a number of different companies, including S Scale America, to continue to produce items, including S, but as of 2023 has not released any information.

Track Components: code 138 flextrack, turnouts (scale & hi-rail), railjoiners
Fox Valley Models started off manufacturing N- and HO-scale cars and engines. The owner, Matt, is the son-in-law of Ron Sebastian (owner of the Des Plaines Hobbies, since passed away). Matt is an S-scale modeler, and so looking to have hi-rail flextrack and turnouts, he had them manufacturered, and thus the company entered the S-scale market. The track components are currently flagged as sold out, but Matt has indicated that a new shipment is expected in early 2023. Please note that the foxvalleymodels.com web site is now abandoned, and you should not visit it.
In 2016 the company announced their S-scale track components, which arrived in 2017. In 2021, Matt joined ScaleTrains as a fulltime Senior Product Developer. Matt helped with the acquisition and transfer of the HO- and S-scale product line owned by MTH when that company decided to close. In 2022, ScaleTrains decided to incorporate the Fox Valley Models' N- and HO-scale product line into their own. Matt later on communicated that the S-scale track components that Fox Valley Models has are not part of the transfer of ownership. Simultaneously, Matt announced the creation of Scale America, so speculation is that he will likely continue to manufacture the S-scale track components under the new company's name.

Track Components: the closest match to original A.F. track, sectional track, turnouts, gauges, track bumpers

This company makes track that is the closest match to the original A.C. Gilbert American Flyer track system.
The company was started in 1940 expressly to manufacture flexible track for O-scale three rail. In the 1950s they invented the "phanthom" center rail by making it black to reduce its visibility. 1959 they had added S-scale two-rail track to their product inventory. In 1963 Don Roder purchased the company. Today, the company is run by Don's two sons, Mike and Tom.

One of the main manufacturers of S-scale products. Lionel owns the "American Flyer" name and produces S-scale products under that name.
In 2006 Lionel announced that it had officially taken over the assets of K-Line, including inventory, intellectual property, tooling, and trademarks, after it won its trademark lawsuit against K-Line. Lionel made a deal with Sanda Kan, K-Line's principal manufacturer and creditor, who in turn worked out a deal with K-Line's bankers. Lionel from then on controlled and operated the K-Line brand and has the right to completely own it in the future. The 0-4-0 switcher and the end-cab switcher that K-Line had previously announced for S-scale were abandoned. That year they announced the products will be sold under the brand name "K-Line by Lionel" and will appear in packaging that is different from Lionel's standard boxes.

Micro Engineering is probably one of the most important companies in our hobby, as they produce rail that they sell directly, and supply rail wholesale to other companies, such as, in S, American Models and Tomalco Track. The micro spikes are now sold out with no intent to produce them again. Rich Rands recalls that one of their tool & die employees fabricated a small punch press that took staples and cut out the center part of the staple to form the micro spikes. He stated that the other sized spikes were manufactured for them by a company in Europe. Whether that is still the case today, he does not know.
The company was founded in 1964 under the name "Rail Craft Products". in 1972 Bob's son Ron Rands joined the company. In 1981 Bob's other son Richard Rands joined the company. They moved to a 4,000sqft building to manufacture the flextrack product line in 1984. In 1997 Richard left the company. In 2010 Ron's daughter Donna Lauer joins the company. In 2021 they announced their planned retirement and subsequent sale of the company. On August 1, 2022, Micro Engineering announced the purchase of the assets, intellectual property, and inventory of Micro Engineering Inc. by Warbonnet Enterprises L.L.C. of Macon, Missouri. The company will operate under the name of "Micro Engineering Company", and will continue to operate at the same address.

Keren Booth, of P-B-L, hand-painted many of those and they were sold at retail by P-B-L. June's Small World was another painter and reseller of these figures, hence you might find duplicates.
The company was started in 1971 in Chama, New Mexico as Peter-Built Locomotive Works, named after the owner Bill Peter, and later renamed to just P-B-L, to upgrade HOn3 and HO-scale locomotives. In 1980 they released their first Sn3 locomotive, the K-37, followed by the K-27 (#453 and #461). In 1981 they bought the Cascade Line of Sn3 kits and trucks. At some point in time they bought the C&S plastic freight car kits from Overland Models, Inc. (who, in turn, it is believed, bought them from Berlyn Locomotive Works). In 1986 P-B-L bought Chama Model Shop from Jim Finnell (produced white metal castings that came with P-B-L's kits); the product line was integrated into P-B-L's Triangle Scale Models product line; the automotive vehicle kits were integrated into the new Milestone Autos product line. In 1990 they moved to their present location, Ukiah, California. George Hall wrote an article published in the July 1995 issue of Model Railroader magazine describing the history of P-B-L and their current status (as of 1995, that is). When Tomalco was sold off, P-B-L acquired the Sn3 track products (Tomalco Track, owned by Larry Morton, took over the standard-gauge track products). As it turns out, the molds for the Sn3 track components are owned by P-B-L, but they reside at Micro Engineering, who are the ones that actually make the products for P-B-L. Video of interview with Bill Peter. Video of Jimmy Booth talking about brass trains (here's another one).
