Ron started the company in 1981, with their first advertisements appearing in 1982 showing their first product, the FP7 diesel locomotive. S-Helper Service, created to support the manufacture of new S-scale products, started collaborating with American Models in 1989. This ended in 1995. The future looked bright when American Models announced in 2017 that they had acquired a new and larger manufacturing facility. Unfortunately, Ron passed away on December 4, 2021. Ron's wife, Karen, announced that the company will continue to operate with the same personnel.

Started as a brick-n-mortar hobby store in 1979 called Bill's Train Shop. In 1984 they changed to a mail-order business. In 1991 they produced their first kit (an S-scale one). In 1996 they bought both Amity Star Models and took over SouthWind Models' brass detailing parts (only). In 1997 they bought Sn3/On3 Rio Grande Models products. In 1998 they bought Master Creations, which was a laser-cut kit manufacturer that started in 1984, and were a sub-contractor for B.T.S.' kits. In 2005 B.T.S. moved to West Virginia. Bill also created and ran the "S/Sn3 Buyers Guide" magazine, published six times per year from 1993 through 1999 (its name was changed to "S/Sn3 Modeling Guide" in 1995).

Gilbert company with displays at train shows, senior residences, and children’s hospitals. The company is named after Clay's brother, Dave. The company provides parts and repair for A. C. Gilbert and S-Helper Service products. They bought the entire supply of S-Helper Service parts when that company had to close.

The store was started in 1983, a brick-n-mortar hobby store that carries all the model railroading scales. The store subsequently bought the following companies: S Scale America (1994), Chesapeake Models (1995), Plano Model Products (1997; S-scale parts only), Microscale Industries (2005; S-scale decals only), Details Associates (2005, S-scale product line only), Pacific Rail Shops (2006), Mullet River Model Works (2015), and Oregon Rail Supply's S-scale signals (year unknown). Note that when Des Plaines Hobbies bought Pacific Rail Shops, they bought the tooling and the name; they did not buy PRS' current inventory, which owners John and Felix Verser continued to sell until gone under their other company name Gold Coast Models. Des Plaines Hobbies releases new S-scale products under their "S Scale America" brand. The best way to describe this is that owner Ron Sebastian used S Scale America as their manufacturing arm. It seems that that arm has effectively stopped when Ron passed away. His son-in-law Matt Gaudinsky has started a new company called Scale America that gathers a number of different companies, including S Scale America, to continue to produce items, including S, but as of 2023 has not released any information.

The company has a "Modeler's Co-op Program" in place. Basically, it is an arrangement between an interested party (one or more people) and Leadville Designs whereby the interested party underwrites the development costs of a particular subject kit. In return, that party receives a substantially reduced price on each kit. Leadville Designs will then offer the kit as part of the line. For every kit sold to the general market, those who underwrote the costs receive a commission. If the kit sells well, the investors could recover their out of pocket costs and even make money.
The company was started in 2018, and is a spinoff of the former The Leadville Shops and before that, The Cimarron Works.

One of the main manufacturers of S-scale products. Lionel owns the "American Flyer" name and produces S-scale products under that name.
In 2006 Lionel announced that it had officially taken over the assets of K-Line, including inventory, intellectual property, tooling, and trademarks, after it won its trademark lawsuit against K-Line. Lionel made a deal with Sanda Kan, K-Line's principal manufacturer and creditor, who in turn worked out a deal with K-Line's bankers. Lionel from then on controlled and operated the K-Line brand and has the right to completely own it in the future. The 0-4-0 switcher and the end-cab switcher that K-Line had previously announced for S-scale were abandoned. That year they announced the products will be sold under the brand name "K-Line by Lionel" and will appear in packaging that is different from Lionel's standard boxes.

Most items they produce are available for S-scale. They are pricey, but if you are looking for something specific, it might be worth it. In July 2023, the company announced that Yarmouth Model Works, based in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, is now a North American retailer for Modelu 3D-printed figures. This is a big boon for those of us in the U.S. and Canada as shipping from England can be quite high. Yarmouth Model Works owner, Pierre Oliver, announced that they will be stocking HO- and O-scale figures that have a North American flavor to them, but that they will be able to order S-scale items by special request. So, if you have been eyeing some of their beautiful figures, but were worried about the high shipping cost, contact Yarmouth.
The company was started in 2015. The name is based on the Welsh word for "modeling".

The main Sn3 manufacturer. It is believed that Pacific Fast Mail manufactured unpainted figures, which they sold directly, and also sold wholesale to P-B-L. Keren Booth, of P-B-L, hand-painted many of those and they were sold at retail by P-B-L. June's Small World was another painter and reseller of these figures, hence you might find duplicates.
The company was started in 1971 in Chama, New Mexico as Peter-Built Locomotive Works, named after the owner Bill Peter, and later renamed to just P-B-L, to upgrade HOn3 and HO-scale locomotives. In 1980 they released their first Sn3 locomotive, the K-37, followed by the K-27 (#453 and #461). In 1981 they bought the Cascade Line of Sn3 kits and trucks. At some point in time they bought the C&S plastic freight car kits from Overland Models, Inc. (who, in turn, it is believed, bought them from Berlyn Locomotive Works). In 1986 P-B-L bought Chama Model Shop from Jim Finnell (produced white metal castings that came with P-B-L's kits); the product line was integrated into P-B-L's Triangle Scale Models product line; the automotive vehicle kits were integrated into the new Milestone Autos product line. In 1990 they moved to their present location, Ukiah, California. George Hall wrote an article published in the July 1995 issue of Model Railroader magazine describing the history of P-B-L and their current status (as of 1995, that is). When Tomalco was sold off, P-B-L acquired the Sn3 track products (Tomalco Track, owned by Larry Morton, took over the standard-gauge track products). As it turns out, the molds for the Sn3 track components are owned by P-B-L, but they reside at Micro Engineering, who are the ones that actually make the products for P-B-L. Video of interview with Bill Peter. Video of Jimmy Booth talking about brass trains (here's another one).

The company was started in 1966. In 1974, with his brass caster, Jeff Thompson, they came up with the name Railmaster. In 1984 the company started exporting Sn3 kits via Scenery Unlimited. In 1988 they sold Railmaster, with a commitment to not sell any kits in New Zealand for three years thereafter. Railmaster Exports was born to only sell outside New Zealand. For a few years in the 2000s, a company in California, called Railmaster Hobbies, served as the company's U.S. distributor. However, in 2017 John Agnew indicated that Railmaster Hobbies are no longer his U.S. distributor (he now sells direct to customers only; Railmaster Hobbies in California is just a regular hobby shop now).
