Scratchbuilding by John Griffin

John built this Schnabel freight car from scratch. The prototype model was basically two halves of the car that could be mounted to each other when not carrying a load, or have a load hung in between them that became part of the structure of the car. These cars were used to carry very heavy and/or very long loads. The car has 36 axles!

John Henning took these two photos of John Griffin's car while posed and running on Doug Evans' modular layout. Even though Doug's layout features a 53"-radius outside curve, it wasn't enough for the car with the load to make it around the layout. So, the photo with the load is "staged". Without the load, the model made it around the layout just fine. Note that John also scratchbuilt the load shown in the photo.
