The link below is a scan of two pages that were included in the 1983 Hoquat Hobbies catalog that owner Jeff Wilson sent in. These pages show drawings made by S-scale modeler Kent Singer, detailing the typical freight car brake systems. Both the early KC and the later AB brake systems are described. When scanned, these pages were 38 years old, so some portions may be hard to read.
