This gauge acts as a three-point track-laying/checking gauge, and its handle can be used for checking the coupler height of cars and engines. The plastic version is handy for use with powered/live track, where the brass version might trigger a short. To correctly use these, make sure the single point is on the inner rail; this will cause the outer rail to be of a slightly wider gauge, which is necessary for proper wheel tracking in multi-axle trucks.
