Roger Nulton detailed and weathered his model, shown here entering a turntable.
Roger put a 2-amp Soundtraxx Tsumani DCC sound decoder in his engine. It shows just how slow you can get it to run. Shown here leaving the turntable.

Brass Kit
Finish:
unpainted
Notes:
The kit had a formed brass frame, brass boiler and cab, with cast-resin steam chest, firebox, smoke box, and tender. It was a "spartan" kit so the owner was to detail it with S Scale Locomotive & Supply parts. The problem with this engine's design was that it used steel tires on plastic spoke drivers with "D" end axles. Over time the axles wore larger holes in the plastic and the drivers became loose and "wobbly". The mechanism was then prone to locking up because the drivers were no longer properly quartered.

Notes:
This kit has the tender of the company's 2-6-0 engine, but with its coal boards cut off. The history is that this was a 2-6-0 kit that the company modified so that those modelers wanting a 2-4-0 didn't have to do as much work.

Here is a one-of-a-kind Rex engine, a prototype/pilot model, it never got in production. It was built by John Sudimak using existing parts from production engines fitted together to make what could have been the next reasonable addition to the company's locomotive line.

This was the first Rex product as produced by the original owner, Bert Carpenter. The freelance model was based on the B&O 0-4-0. It was re-run in 1989 (as per news announcement posted in the 1988 Model Railroader magazine) by Rex' new owner Putt Trains.

According to the S&P Distributors 1968 catalog, this is a freelance model, but is close to the NYC class "D" locomotive. Noted NYC modeler, Dick Karnes, confirms this, as he had to do extensive work on his model to get it to match a NYC D-1a.

The die to make the 2-6-0 was created by reworking the 2-4-4T die. This was completed by the new owners of Rex Engineering, S&P Distributors. The model is a freelanced one, with a PRR-style cab, Baldwin domes, and Burlington-style headlight. The PRR Belpaire conversion kit was separately available from Rex. The kit consists primarily of high-pressure zamac castings, steel- or brass-tired drive wheels, a Pittman DC-71 open-frame motor, and plastic dummy couplers. Putt Trains re-introduced the model in 2003 both in ready-to-run and kit form. If you want to replace that motor with something more modern, try the Canon CN-22.

Notes:
The PRR Belpaire conversion kit was separately available from Rex. with a conversion to a PRR model via a brass add-on Belpaire firebox casting. This model does not have the Walschaert valve gear put on it. This switcher is a freelance passenger or light-freight locomotive designed from several prototypes, but the closest prototype is the PRR's B6 class. The PRR actually provided blueprints to Rex when they were designing this model. The NASG's Mobley Library has the kit's instruction booklet available. Putt Trains re-introduced the model in 2003 both in ready-to-run and kit form.

The first run of DCC-enabled engines used the 1-amp Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders, but they would get hot and shut down. In subsequent runs, the company used the QSI sound decoder, which was rated for 1.5amps.

Made of heavy brass construction, with some parts being castings. These kits were released in four parts. A customer had to buy part 1 (first section of the locomotive), then later part 2 (the rest of the locomotive), followed by part 3 (the drive train) and part 4 (the tender) before all of the kit was accumulated to actually build the model. The model did not run well.
