These were the last steam engines that the Southern Pacific ordered. The basic design was that this was a 2-8-8-4 engine running in reverse (a.k.a "cab-forward"). The idea was to keep the crew from asphyxiating themselves while running a steam engine through a tunnel, by having the smoke be exhausted behind them. The last AC-12, #4294, is preserved in the California State Railroad Museum, Old Sacramento, California.
