The very early production runs of these engines were in a kit form, which is what Holt Apgar used to build his. He modified it by installing perforated engine grills from Des Plaines Hobbies, custom glazing applied to front and rear cab windows (used clear plastic inserts from under collars of newly-purchased men's shirts!). No side glazing used for better airflow, and no headlight lenses used (none were provided in kit for either of these). He painted the handrails yellow, as per the prototype, and used custom dry transfer numbers on the number boards. American Models couplers used.

This was Bill Lane's first S-scale model that he effectively substantially re-worked. All details, repaint, and decals were done by Bill.
