The company was started in 2015. The name is based on the Welsh word for "modeling". In July 2023, the company announced that Yarmouth Model Works (Pierre Oliver), based in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, is the North American retailer for Modelu 3D-printed figures. In August 2025 Pierre announced that he is closing his business and his Modelu distributorship. Modelu announced that they will stop taking orders from U.S. customers starting at the end of August 2025 due to the large costs of shipping to the U.S. from the U.K. They hope to find a U.S.-based solution to this issue.
