Tools: S-scale Rulers

Every so often the question comes up about rulers that S-scale modelers use, and which ones they prefer. It is, of course, a very personal choice, and it depends on how you use them. On this page we want to capture all known rulers that specifically show S-scale graduations or 1/64" markings (which translate to 1" in S-scale), shown in alphabetical order.

BrassDogs

This is a flexible plastic ruler. It measures 6 inches and solely dedicated to S-scale, and includes the S track gauge markings. It is sold via their eBay store.

Similar to the above, but this one is 24 inches long. It is sold via their eBay store.

General Tools & Instruments

The metal ruler, part #1251, that shows many different scales, including S, is a favorite of many. However, it appears that General no longer makes this model. Their web site doesn't list it, and Walthers' web site shows it as out-of-stock.

HobbyTools.com

HobbyTools.com, owned by B&B Hobby Supplies, offers rulers in various scales, including S. They offer two lengths. Their 13" ruler measures out 12 actual inches on the scale along the bottom edge of the ruler, and S-scale feet along the top edge. The zero-number is the left-hand edge of the ruler itself. The 7" ruler measures out 6 actual inches, but is otherwise identical to the longer one. These two-inch wide rulers are made out of 0.060"-thick styrene.

Mascot Precision Tools

Mascot Precision Tools also has a similar ruler to the General, but it appears to be out of stock (Amazon, HobbyLinc).

MicroLux

MicroLux makes an all-scales ruler similar to the General one, part #10116, and it is available in the U.S. via Micro-Mark.

NASG

The NASG itself carries a sturdy, stainless-steel, 6-inch pocket ruler has engraved markings on both sides. Both sides show full inch marks, with one side also showing 1/8th (S-scale 8") and 1/16th (S-scale 4") demarkations, and the other side showing 1/32nd (S-scale 2") and 1/64th (S-scale 1") demarkations. The zero mark is the left edge and the 6" mark is the right edge of the physical ruler. Both sides are shown in the photo below.

We also now have a 12-inch Architect Ruler. The 3/16th scale marks off S-scale foot measurements (even numbers are indicated, with the in-between longer line marking the odd foot number, and the shorter lines indicating the 1/2-foot or 6-inch markings). The individual markings to the right of the zero-mark indicate the S-scale inch marks.

Penn Tool Co.

This company makes generic 6", 12", 18", and 24" stainless steel rulers that have 1/64" markings along the bottom edge.

General Note: Architect Rulers

If you have done any drafting or paper design work, you will be familiar with the architect's ruler. This has a standard "3/16" scale on it. Each major marking represents a scale foot in S-scale. These are available just about anywhere where drafting products are sold.
