The finish on this unit is flat black whereas the finish on the other is glossy. In the second row is the second variation that has black handrails, shinny ladders, and operating knuckle couplers. All of which have weighted link couplers and die-cast metal frames. Note that the 625G was an uncataloged item. Photo #3, #33683, is a custom reproduction of what would have been the 1954 Celanese Tank Car with a tan and yellow paint scheme instead of the correct light green and yellow paint scheme. The car utilized a #635 Shell Tank car, which was repainted, the link couplers were replaced with reproduction knuckle couplers that use split rivets to attach the coupler to the trucks. Note the orange TCA "Altered Sticker" on the bottom of the chassis.

Very few #925 Gulf tank cars were produced in 1952 with knuckle couplers. The ones that were produced in 1952 have knuckle couplers that are riveted to the trucks. Photo #2 shows the underside of all three 925 Gulf tank cars. The bottom one is the foreground one in the main photo, and the middle one is the middle one in the main photo. Photo #3 shows a #925 Ted relettered to an SP&S Trumbull Asphalt car.

Hooker Chemical Tank Car was first offered in 1961 and then for a second time as #(24329) in 1965-66. A common practice today is to put the catalog number in parenthesis, if the number does not appear on the car. However, Gilbert assigned #24329 to both releases of the car. The 1961 model has one variation however, within that variation the car can be found with two different shades of orange tanks. The 1965-66 #(24329) model has three variations all of which has no information printed on the tank body, which includes the car number. The first, shown in the photo, is orange, without a black band. However, it has a black platform and blackened unpainted handrails and ladders. The second has a light orange body and a black band. The last variation is a stripped down car made in 1965 only. It is orange and lacks a black band, a platform, handrails, ladders, a brake wheel, and diamond markers.

This model is an uncataloged item from 1957 that has two variations. The two variations deal with the date on the side of the car. The first reads "NEW 4-51" as shown in the photo while the second reads "NEW 6-51". In the 1957 catalog, the Mobilgas tank car was listed as #24316 but was not sold in 1957 with #24316 on the car, but instead #958 was produced and sold. One odd thing about the catalog illustration and text is that, while the text states the car/catalog number is #24316, the actual illustration shows #958 on the side of the car.

The Mobilgas tank car was offered twice by Gilbert; the first time was 1958-61, and the second time was 1965-66. The #24316 has eight variations. Four of the variations were produced in 1958-61 and all have Type II plastic frames. Two are painted red over black shells, one of which has a date that reads "NEW 4-51" as shown in the photo. The second has a date that reads "NEW 4-57". The third 1958-61 model variation is painted red over a blue plastic shell while the fourth is painted red over a white shell. The other four variations have Type III plastic frames where the tank is open at the bottom and part of the frame makes the bottom part of the tank body. The first of these four variations was produced in 1960-61 that has knuckle couplers with sintered-iron trucks. The three remaining tank cars were all produced in 1965-66 and have Pike-Master trucks and couplers. These were packaged in "All Aboard" boxes. Photo #2 is of a mint-condition one. Of special note is the fact that factory printed the box' lettering upside-down. Two of the three variations of this group are painted red over a black plastic shell the date on one is "NEW 4-51" and the date on the other is "NEW 4-57". The last car is painted red over a blue painted white plastic shell with a date of "NEW 4-51".

Both rare models. The one with the smaller lettering in front is the 1946 pre-production model with scale wheel flanges and a different lettering style. In the background is the production model. The pre-production model with the scale wheels, as Gilbert originally intended, caused derailments on their track and switches, so Gilbert went to their standard wheel flanges. The pre-production model had lettering of 80,000lbs, but the production model has a capacity rating of 8,000lbs. There are reportedly only four of these in existence. The second photo is shows the three major variation of the Shell tank car other than the orange models. In the front is an early 1946 model with a plastic frame that has silver lettering. In 1947 Gilbert introduced the die-cast metal frame to eliminate the warping problem that is shown in the second row. This unit has white letter and was produced in 1947-48. In the third row is the silver variation that was also introduced in 1947 with four variations that were produced in 1947-1950.

Shell Tank Car was sold in 1962-66. According to all of the current guides there are three reported variations, but in fact there are four, all of which have Type III plastic frames. The first is a bit rare which is painted yellow over a white plastic tank with a black ladder and is missing the typical "SHELL" sticker. The second and third variations are more common. They both have yellow plastic tank bodies and brake wheels with shiny handrails and ladders. One unit has one diamond marker; the other, as shown in the rear of the photo, has two markers. The fourth one is shown in the foreground of the photo, which is not mentioned in the Greenberg reference guide, and has a blue plastic frame.

One of the 1986 NASG "Special Projects" cars. The model was based on an American Car & Foundry 10,000-gallon insulated, low-pressure tank car. Insulated cars have a slightly larger diameter and inset ends, to cover the insulation. This particular car was used to transport various tar, molasses, corn syrup, heavy oils, etc. Lines ran through the insulation to heat up the content so that it would flow into and out of the tank. The models included the safety platform around the dome, and had the AB brake system installed. They were available with either scale coil-sprung T-section Bettendorf trucks, or AF-compatible Ace sprung-Bettendorf trucks with hi-rail wheels. 50 models were produced by Ajin of Korea, and imported unpainted.

One of the 1986 NASG "Special Projects" cars. The model was based on an American Car & Foundry 10,000-gallon insulated, high-pressure tank car. Insulated cars have a slightly larger diameter and inset ends, to cover the insulation. The small dome is also indicative of the high-pressure feature. This particular car was used to transport vinyl chloride, anhydrous ammonia, liquid propane, gasoline additives, etc. 53 models were produced by Ajin of Korea, and imported unpainted. The last four photos are of Ed Kirstatter's model.

Notes:
These Type 27 tank cars were built from 1927 well into the 1940s. American Car & Foundry built more than 1,800 of them. They were the most common type of tank car in the first half of the 20th century. These cars were used to carry petroleum, alcohol, ammonia, chemicals, molasses, and vegetable oil. Most were rebuilt for use as maintenance-of-way cars well into the 1980s.
The kit was manufactured for us by Miniatures of the North. The kit consists of 3D-printed parts and wooden footboards. The final model is very accurate and detailed. The kit does not include trucks, couplers, or decals.
The two additional images are scans courtesy of Jim Kindraka showing the list of prototype railroads that used this tank car.

"LPG". Very thin decals included. Jay Mellon's photo is an example of a "reality check" when dealing with older kits. He bought the unbuilt kit second-hand sometime in the 2010s. By that time the kit was 40 years old and he has no way of knowing how the kit was stored by the previous owner(s). He committed himself to build the kit as originally intended, so no substitute parts. The truck bolsters of the kit were made out of metal and Jay found them to be crumbling in his hands as he was trying to work with them. He used Walthers Goo to keep the bolsters' parts together. The walkway brass part was in a deteriorated state as well. The decals that came with the kit turned out to be unsalvagable in their original intent, so in the end he simply wound up cutting them out and gluing them to the car with backing paper and all.
