Passenger Car (heavyweight) Baggage

Model Introduced:

2013

Product Type:

Plastic

Finish:

painted, not lettered

Prototype Dimensions:

70'

Notes:

Starting in late 2013, American Models produced this heavyweight baggage car as the NASG scale/hi-rail project car, i.e. stand-alone. Painted Pullman green, this car was previously only available as part of the PRR five-car set. The photo shows a slightly modified version. It shows Kadee couplers installed (which do not come with the model), the talgo mounted coupler has been removed, and the truck has been turned 180 degrees and remounted in the hole nearest the end of the car (to make the trucks appear to be closer to the ends of the car). Neither of these changes are required to use the car as-is in your consist.

Brass/Wood Kit

Finish:

unpainted

Prototype Dimensions:

67'

Notes:

The kit consisted of photo-engraved brass components for sides (with window sashes already soldered in place), ends, vestibules, doors, and battery-box covers. Additional components included brass sheet floor, assorted wire, a brass-plated soft-metal K brake casting (not appropriate for these types of cars), and seven wood shapes which together formed the hollow clerestory roof. The kit did not include trucks. Later editions of these cars had brass-plated soft-metal ends instead of photo-engraved brass sheet. These could not be soldered with available solders at the time, so they had to be epoxied in place.

Notes:

These kits were reproduction Kinsman kits. The early production run had wooden roofs, but these were later released with resin roofs. The sides, ends, and floor are resin castings. The roof comes as one piece. Additionally, the kit includes one-piece plastic end railings, resin steps, truss rod stanchions, brakewheels, and two curved roof end pieces. The modeler needs to add truss rod wires, turnbuckles, underbody detail, end handrails, (stove) smokestacks, vents, acetate for the windows, trucks, and couplers.
