Manufacturer ID:

23743

Category:

M.O.W.

Road Number:

23743

Model Introduced:

1960

Finish:

painted & lettered

Notes:

The #23743 was produced from 1960 through 1964 in only one variation. It has an inexpensive motor ink-stamped "JAPAN" that operates on 9 volts. One must limit the power to the unit as many transformers can apply voltages up to 15 volts to the track. The unit came in a Kleer-Pak carton, as shown in the second photo. The miniature driver of the #23743 is the same unit as used on the #779 Barrel Loader. There are very few examples of this model. The very rare unit that has "743" in black lettering on each end of both sides of the unit instead of "23743" has been seen sold for $10,000.

The model shown in the first two photos is of a CNR model built by Trevor Marshall. The third photo shows Ed Kirstatter's model which rides on archbar trucks. The rear coupler on his model is a Kadee S-scale one. He used the stock decals. The last photo is the original catalog photo.

Al built this kit, and then painted and lettered it for his favorite NKP Road. The instruction sheet included with the kit was for the O-scale kit made by Train-Craft Products, an out-of-business company at the time. The January 1953 Model Railroader issue (pp 7-8) shows these kits.

Northern Pacific (NP)

Model Introduced:

2014

Product Type:

3D-printed Plastic

Finish:

unpainted

Notes:

This 3D-printed Russell Winged Snow Plow kit is loosely based on the Northern Pacific Railway version. It is designed with hinged side wings (h-Bar brass hinges) utilizing lock bars (pinned hinges) with a magnetic latching system allowing the wings to be set varying positions and keeping those wings in place during operation. Also included is a lower blade that magnetically attaches to any metal chassis. Key components of the snow plow kit have been pre-assembled, only the detail options (railings, steps) and the clear windows need to be added. You can use the 3D-printed railings and steps provided in the kit or substitute your own versions. The American Flyer Caboose railings will fit nicely. These items can be affixed using a superglue (Cyanoacrylate) to permanently mount them to the snow plow shell. The entire snow plow is 3D printed in ABS plastic except for the clear windows which are cut from a clear styrene sheet. If desired, the kit can be sanded with extra smoothing achieved by wiping down the shell with acetone; which will also yield a shiny finish. ABS plastic can be painted with acrylic and enamel paints with or without a primer. We recommend a paint sealer if the unit is to be handled a lot or run on a regular basis. The shell has been designed to mount to a standard American Flyer caboose chassis measuring 42-44mm wide by 115-118mm long. It is available in the following colors of ABS plastic: gray, gold, red, tan, brown, blue, green, orange, black, and white.

Model Introduced:

1950s?

Product Type:

Wood Kit

Finish:

Prototype Dimensions:

Supplemental:

Notes:

The kit is pretty bare-bones, consisting of a dowel with a sheathing wrapper, a bunch of strip wood, and some metal parts. The supplemental link is to the scanned instruction sheets that came with the kit. So far, no one has been able to determine the prototype that this car may have been based on, if it even was based on one. Bob Hogan states that the kit is intended to have truss rods, but he added a fish-belly underframe instead, because of the crude and broken queen posts in the kit.

This is a model of a tool-and-office car. It had white metal castings for the brake wheel, "K" brakes, smoke stack, and end sill and coupler pocket. The door and window cover can be made to slide open. This model has complete brake rigging, Perma-Bilt Bettendorf trucks, and American Models dummy couplers installed. The second photo is by former Sunshine Models owner, Steve Monson.
