The 4-8-4 Northern (known to A.F. fans as "The Challenger"). The earliest models had the smoke-in-tender unit, but were quickly changed to the smoke in boiler by 1948. Production in 1946 and 1947 was very small, so the early locomotives are very hard to find. Tender was made out of diecast zamac.

It was a diecast model and featured Pull-Mor power (rubber-tired driving wheels for traction), worm-drive motor, sound, red-glowing smoke, an air-chime whistle in the tender, and realistic knuckle couplers. #336 was made from 1953 through 1956. Tender was made out of diecast zamac.

Product Type:Metal Kit

This kit enabled the modeler to convert an A.C. Gilbert American Flyer locomotive to "scale". The kit contained replacement wheels/axles for tender, pilot, and trailing trucks as well as scale drivers and axles. The axles had "D"-shaped ends, and the zamac driver centers had "D"-shaped openings to match. This design assured proper quartering. The modeler had to remove the AF drivers, axles, and worm gear, then use the reverse procedure to install the scale versions (applied using the jaws of a vice to keep the drivers perpendicular to the axles).
