Holt painted this model such that it represents an F7 A-unit, because the NYC never had any FP7 engines (which is what the American Model model is). The FP7 is 4 feet longer to be able to store the equipment needed to support passenger car heating. He painted over the bottom headlight to better mimic an F7. He added number board dry transfers, and custom glazing for the cab door windows, as well as a working rear coupler. Photo #2 shows AM's A- and B-unit. The paint scheme was for the passenger trains. Available in the following configurations: - single A-unit. - A- and B-unit, with B-unit holding the sound module. - A- and B-unit, with B-unit also powered. - A-B-A set, with B-unit holding the sound module.

This model was reviewed in the December 1982 Model Railroader issue by Jim Hediger. He stated that the model matched all scale dimensions of the prototype engine. Jim stated, "The paintwork is well done, but the lettering and striping tends to break up a bit where it has to conform to raised details". With the Sagami motor, the engine drew 0.4A at 12V, and slipped at 0.54A at 12V. He reported a 3.14 scale miles per hour as the slow speed, and top speed was just slightly slower than what a prototype FP7 could do. It came pre-installed with Kadee HO-scale #5 couplers. Their review sample was lettered for the Union Pacific. Photo #2 shows both the A- and B-unit. Photo #3 shows Bob's UP unit modified to represent a Milwaukee Road unit with Walthers O-scale decals used. Available in the following configurations: - single A-unit. - A- and B-unit, with B-unit holding the sound module. - A- and B-unit, with B-unit also powered. - A-B-A set, with B-unit holding the sound module.

This is a GP7 that Bob built from the American Models GP9 engine. He replaced the hoods with parts available from Des Plaines Hobbies, and added many details, including many PRR-specific details. For more information about how he built this model, see the online article link.

The main photo shows the raw model as received from American Models, and does not have the additional detailing parts installed. Parts included allow the modeler to detail the engine to resemble a Phase II or Phase III GP9, or a GP18. Photo #2 and #3 are of Holt's model that he painted for the Boston & Maine. He added the grills by Des Plaines Hobbies. He primed the model with Model Master flat engine gray, then painted the top coat with Model Master's cobalt blue, black, and white. Decals are by Micro Scale and Woodland Scenics. A flat lacquer was applied to seal it all in. The Boston & Maine traded 48 FT locomotives for 50 GP9 engines from EMD in 1957. The link to the video is of a GP9 model converted to a short hood, and with custom-sound DCC decoder installed, modeled after the Grapevine Vintage Railroad GP7. The undecorated version was reviewed in the June 1989 issue of the NASG's The Dispatch.

The American Models photo states GP18, but it seems that the 700-series ATSF engines were all GP9, and no evidence has been found that the ATSF ever had any GP18 locomotives.

Holt's model is of the older "kit" version of this engine (the second photo is of the stock, ready-to-run version American Models currently sells). Holt improved the handrails and cab steps, which were painted orange (with some weathering). He replaced the side grills with the perforated ones still sold by Des Plaines Hobbies. He also added the road numbers to the number boards, and AF-compatible couplers.

Red body color. Their GP9 locomotives are sold with detailing parts to make phase II, phase III, or GP18 units. Photo #2 shows the model converted to a Lehigh Valley one as done by Holt. Holt used S-scale black "piping" stripe decals which he bought from Des Plaines Hobbies 30 years before applying to this model. The perforated side screens are also from Des Plaines Hobbies. Testors flat red enamel was darkened slightly to patch AM's red on this model. Holt installed the window glazing to the front and rear cab windows, and the front and rear headlights. A light weathering was done with thinned flat black enamel, as well as flat clear lacquer, which also sealed the decals. Yellow flat enamel was brushed on the handrails by the steps, as per the LV prototype photos.

This model is of the older kit version. Also available in road number 7015. Holt modified the model shown by installing perforated engine grills from Des Plaines Hobbies, custom glazing applied to front and rear cab windows (used clear plastic inserts from under collars of newly-purchased men's shirts!). No side glazing used for better airflow, and no headlight lenses used (none were provided in kit for either of these). He painted the handrails yellow, as per the prototype, and used custom dry transfer numbers on the number boards. American Models couplers used.

This model was available in kit form, but is now released as a ready-to-run version. Holt painted the handrails yellow, as per the NYC prototype. Also note that there are no side windows in the cab. This, too, is per the prototype to increase airflow into the engine. The model also has illuminated number boards with dry transfers from Woodland Scenics, and working couplers.

Also produced with road number 561. Holt's model in the photo was built from the original kit version (today's version is in the ready-to-run one). It has the 1956 black scheme for NH road switchers. This kit came with working couplers and road numbers on the number boards. Holt painted and attached all the handrails as per the prototype. Dry transfers were used for additional road numbers at both ends, just to the right of the headlights, as per NH practice. He then used only the front and rear cab glazing, leaving side cab windows open for better airflow.

Photo #2 is of Holt's model (which was the older kit version) to which he applied railings, headlights, horn, front and back cab windows (sides open for airflow), and dry transfer numbers to number boards. Painted safety rails yellow as per prototype. The PRR purchased 121 RS-3s between 1950 and 1953, for both freight and passenger (commuter) duty. Many came with dual controls (as did # 8849) to permit operation with either long hood or short hood forward. The RS-3s were used in all regions of Pennsylvania RR operations; many served for 20 years into the Conrail era.
