There was only one variation of #623, offered in 1953. Some reports indicate that there was a 1952 version, but Ted has found no such evidence. Trivia: the Illinois Central is the only car that was produced with all four American Flyer number series: 600, 800, 900, and the five-digit number series.

This model was produced in 1958 and 1959 and has two variations. The common variation has an orange plastic shell, as shown in the front of the photo. The rare variation, produced in 1958, is painted orange, but a shade darker. Because of the rarity of the painted variation, it commands a very high price in today's collector market. The reason for the rarity of the painted model is that it was offered as part of the uncataloged #20151 Simmons Special train set. According to various sources, there were less than 500 of these sets produced. Each set contained two #24403 IC Reefers therefore there are less that 1,000 known to exist.

This reefer was not sold separately, but was part of the 20161 Simmons Display Set that contained two of these cars. It was offered as a store premium by a small regional group furniture stores in Michigan only. The Michigan store wanted to further promote the national "Simmons Carload Bargains Sale" that was featured in Life on June 9, 1958. When a second furniture store saw what was happening they wanted to get in on the action. They went to Gilbert to have them make a few sets for them but the contract between the Michigan store and Gilbert would not allow it. Gilbert offered the second store the uncataloged 20151 Simmons Special Set that contained two 24403 painted Illinois Central reefers with a sticker like the logo on the side of the 24420 that could be placed on the side allowing them to use the 20151 set to promote the sale. To date none of the stickers have been found and the painted 24403 IC reefers are as rare as the 24420 Simmons reefers. Some say that there was less than 500 of each set ever made but the exact number is unknown.

The #24425 reefer was produced in 1960 only and has two variations. One variation has sintered-iron trucks with knuckle couplers. The second variation has Pike Master trucks and couplers. The BAR is a highly prized car, and as such they command a rather high price in today's collector's market. An odd fact about the #24425 is that it was produced in 1960 the year before the Pike Master era yet there is the one variation with Pike Master trucks and couplers, which is hard to explain.

This is a kit of the SOO Line 40-foot, 35-ton wood reefer. It was a craftsman wood-and-plastic kit with pre-painted and lettered wood sides. The warped plastic ends and roof ice hatches were replaced, and other detail parts added to this fairly easy-to-assemble kit. Ed also used Northeastern Andrews type trucks and Kadee #802 couplers. The model weighs 7 ounces.

Fox trucks and truss rods. At the time the photo of the model was taken, Jack no longer recalled the manufacturer. Dick Karnes believes it to be a Kinsman kit, however, Bob Werre believes that only the sides may have been from the Kinsman kit. He thinks that the hatches and the roof are not typical of a Kinsman kit, and that the truss rods are also not typical of their kits. The trucks are by Trainstuff. It could be that Jack built this model from parts of several kits and/or scratchbuilt some of them. We may never know for sure.

Bob believes this to be a Mainline Models kit, but he's not 100% sure. The 1950s kit came with paper sides, which he replaced with styrene, but he painted it and used decals matching the original kit's decoration.

These kits consisted of a wooden framework (for the floor, two roof strips, end blocks, and spacer blocks), over which the pre-painted/lettered stamped metal sides, ends, roof, and roof walk were to be applied. Bob got this model second-hand and had to essentially re-create the sides to make them look like the originals as much as possible, because they were in really bad condition. The paint on these models flakes off after a while. He added some Pacific Rail Shops details, Grandt Line AB brake system components, and door hinges.

Photo #2 shows road number 3759, which was SHS #00494. That car was also included in the three-car set SHS #00684, which included road numbers 4623 (Photo #3), 2609 (Photo #4), and 3759. There actually are differences between the cars that were sold individually (00493 and 00494) and those included in the set (00684), namely, the individual cars has green ladders, whereas the ones in the set were black; the individual cars had brown brake wheels, whereas the ones in the set were green; the individual cars had white reporting marks on the cars' ends, whereas the ones in the set had yellow reporting marks on the ends. So, once removed from their boxes, that's how you can tell them apart. Note that S-Helper Service also did a special run for Hoquat Hobbies (#01607 and #01608, road numbers 2640 and 4420, respectively). These were slightly different still, in that they had green brake wheels, green ladders, and brown trucks (all the other cars mentioned here had black trucks).

Note that, even though S-Helper Service did fantastic work in making their models as accurate as possible through extensive research, the Swift reefers used the wrong reporting marks on the car. Instead of "SLRX" they should state "SRLX". Sources for this information are "Classic Freight Cars, Vol. 3: 40 ft Refrigerator Cars" by John Henderson (ISBN 1-882608-01-1), and "Refrigerator Car Color Guide" by Gene Green (ISBN 1-58248-165-2).
