Ed added grab irons and Kadee #802 couplers. This model has a 6-foot door whereas the prototype used 8-foot ones. The real cars (400) were built by Pullman in 1957, and looked similar to the PS-1 design cars. The circled-T to the left of the road number indicates these cars were suitable to use in time saver service.

1937 AAR. Factory-painted and lettered (for 1955). To build this easy-to-build kit, Ed used superglue to attach all the parts. He had to drill out a few holes here and there for easier fit. He sprayed the car with Testors Dullcote, added Kadee S-scale #808 couplers, replaced the plastic wheels with blackened brass ones, and installed 2 ounces of A-line weights. This model appears to be similar to the Pacific Rail Shops' kits.

This kit is unique in that the sides are made from very thin brass that is die-punched to simulate the panel seams and rivet detail. The sides come mounted on 1/16" card stock. The result is fairly crude by today's standards. The balance of the kit consists of a milled roof, basswood strips, milled wood bolsters, white-metal Miller 5/5/5 panel ends, white-metal Superior 6' doors, white-metal AB brake details and steel grab irons. Formed brass door guides and brass pins for attaching both the guides and end steps are also included.

The trucks on the model are by American Models, and the couplers are Kadee S-scale 802. PRS part number B-411 offered two of these cars in a set.

This 50-foot car came as an injection-molded plastic kit that was already painted and decorated. The trucks were assembled, and the brake beams needed to be snapped into place. Ed cut and filed the sill tabs out to make a different looking car. He also replaced the plastic wheels with S-Helper Service metal ones, and installed Kadee #802 couplers. These kits consisted of a wooden framework (for the floor, two roof strips, end blocks, and spacer blocks), over which the pre-painted/lettered stamped metal sides (not numbered), ends, roof, and roof walk were to be applied. The outside bracing is very shallow, and has rivet impressions beside them. This does not represent a composite wood car. The underframe has the minimum of detail parts applied. The model in the photo still has the HO-scale Kadee ramp-operated couplers from before they invented the magnetically-operated ones. It has, however, been upgraded with American Models sprung Bettendorf type of trucks.

Youngstown doors. Decals used: SSADPRR16. Temporary trucks installed. See online article for how the model was built. The PRR built them over a period of ten years from 1924 to 1934. They had an 8.5-foot interior height. As initially built, these cars came with Creco doors, KD brakes, and Carmer cut levers. A total of 18,000 of those were built, in five different road number series. Starting in 1928, the cars were equipped with Youngstown doors. A total of 11,476 of those were built. Starting in 1932 the cars were being equipped with AB brakes, which was completed on almost all cars by the late 1940s to early 1950s. Note that some cars with the Creco doors remained in service until the 1960s. Other railroads used this same car design, so Des Plaines Hobbies has decals available for those as well.

Super Scale manufactured diesel locomotive, passenger, and freight car kits in the 1940s. Perma Bilt, Super Scale's successor, continued the freight cars but abandoned the diesels and passenger cars. Chief spotting difference in house cars is the roof. Super Scale roofs were wood with separately-attached metal ribs. Perma Bilt roofs were one-piece metal stampings. Kits included wood roof, floor, and end blocks; embossed steel ends and pre--painted-lettered sides, steel center sill, and stamped steel and soft metal details. No trucks. Specimen built by Dick Karnes. Northeastern Bettendorf trucks. HO Kadee couplers.

This version has the flat roof panels, which were built first. The model features the National Steel Car company's unique ends. There were over 5,700 of these cars made between 1937 and 1946. They had a ten-foot interior height. The kit features a one piece resin casting, laser cut running boards, custom photo etchings, Des Plaines Canadian ladders, and Black Cat decals. The last photo is of a pre-production model, clearly showing the unique ends. Important: the model's body was based on the Pacific Rail Shops body casting, which, unbeknownst to Yarmouth Model Works, is still owned by Des Plaines Hobbies, and so copyright claims halted the sale of this car.
