#25 Smoke Cartridges were produced from 1947 through 1956. Three variations were reported, having to do with the packaging. The first two variations came in a yellow and blue box that contained 12 red plastic capsules, a pipe cleaner and small funnel (see main photo). The first variation came in a box with a label marked "M2426". The second variation, which is shown in the main photo, came in a box marked "B-1082". The third variation came in a white envelope marked "M2660" that contained just one smoke capsule, a pipe cleaner and funnel. This envelope also carried the American Flyer part number P-1581-258 (see Photo #4) which was typical for items that were not sold separately and were included as part of a cataloged item. The third variation most likely came packaged with a locomotive that was equipped with a smoke and choo-choo feature and this item was a starter item. In Photo #3, you will note a Master Carton of the #25 Smoke Cartridges. This package typically contained six individual boxes of the #25 cartridges. From 1957 through 1959 the Smoke Cartridges received the new 5-Digit catalog number of #23025 that was packaged in a bright red and white box. The new #23025 Smoke Cartridges package contained 12 capsules and a small funnel but lacked the pipe cleaner. The red and white box also carried a new statement that read: "Harmless if swallowed accidently".
