Alco Blunt Truck Sideframes

(updated)

Web Site

Smoky Mountain Model Works announces the ability to order the Alco "Blunt" sideframes. Unlike their AAR Type A and B sideframe kits, the Blunt sideframes will be 3D-printed as a single piece. The only assembly required is swapping four screws (supplied) and minor modification to the U-shaped fork molded onto each side of the Stanton gearbox. Smoky Mountain Model Works no longer sells the Stanton drives, but you can order those directly from NorthWest Short Line. The Blunt sideframes are $35 for four sideframes (for two trucks), plus postage. These will be professionally printed by Shapeways, and can only be ordered via Smoky Mountain Model Works. They will be ordered in batches. The first batch is shipping the first week in November 2017. If you are interested in these and missed the first batch, contact the company to be put on their next list. These are not in-stock items.

Containers, Semi-trailers Paper Models Kits

(updated)

Web Site

Team Track Models is a relatively new company based in Eugene, Oregon and run by two brothers. They sell downloadable designs that you print on a color printer, apply to a substrate, and build into a model. For S-scale they currently offer shipping containers (20', 40', 45'), and semi-trailers (28', 40', 45'). Even if you don't have a color printer, you can still use their designs if you have a FedEx Office store nearby (they have a F.A.Q. on their web site that describes how to print the design). On the Team Track Models web site be sure to click on the options selection list to see if they indeed make an S-scale version for the model. Update: communication from the company's owners indicates that they don't recommend simply scaling up an HO-scale design to make it fit S-scale. Instead, they prefer to redesign the model to fit a particular scale, so that all proportions remain correct. They indicated that they are now planning on expanding their product line to start including S-scale versions on a more regular basis. (thanks to Don Thompson for providing us the lead on this).

Depressed-center Flat Car Kit

(new)

Web Site

Long a producer of HO-scale heavy-duty depressed-center flat car kits, Concept Models is now releasing their special flat car kits in S-scale. Many parts have been designed utilizing state-of-the-art CAD systems. This model is of a super-sized depressed-center flat. Broad curves are preferred for a car of this size for best appearance and operation. The flat load platform measures in excess of 32 scale feet. Although the primary load for this type of car is large transformers, military items are also appropriate. The model is a scale 142 feet long and requires eight 4-wheel trucks. It will be an impressive sight to see it run on the layout. This model is based on a modern prototype flat car (see the Kasgro Rail Corporation web site, 16-axle FD type). The kit is available at $69.99 without a load, or $114.99 with the load kit. The kit includes decals but no trucks or couplers. The load kit is also available separately, for modeling extra loads ready to be shipped. Assembled with ACC cement, the kit can be completed in a few evenings. The model consists of resin castings and assembly hardware. Focus is on providing the basis for the modeler to exercise his or her skill in taking the model to the detail level desired. Instructions are all photo-illustrated by an experienced technical writer. The kit can be ordered online via their web site, and the company ships anywhere in the world.

Bolster Replacement for Lionel Cylindrical Hoppers

(updated)

e-mail

Ben Trousdale announces the availability of replacement bolsters for the Lionel American Flyer cylindrical covered hoppers. The bolster is designed to replace the stamped-metal truck bolster that comes with Lionel's hoppers. The bolster lowers the car height so that a Kadee #802 S-scale coupler installed directly to the car floor bottom, winds up to perfectly comply with the NASG standards. The bolsters are very finely 3D-printed plastic parts printed by Shapeways. Frosted plastic will need to be painted. Black plastic may be installed without painting. The bolsters are sold in pairs with screws.

Frosted Extreme Detail plastic printed bolsters are $5.75 per pair, plus shipping.

Black High Definition Acrylate plastic printed bolsters are $7.00 per pair, plus shipping.

Please note that Ben is selling them not as a business but as an individual; he is just offering them as a service to fellow S-scale modelers. Therefore, if you prefer to pay him with PayPal, be sure to account for the fees that PayPal charges (2.9% on the payment total, plus $0.25 per transaction).

So, now is the time for pre-orders. The first run will be placed with Shapeways on August 15, 2017, so be sure to get your orders in ahead of that deadline. Ben is also offering 0.015" spacers for those who think this new bolster is too low. Click on the e-mail link on the left, to let Ben know that you are interested and make payment arrangements with him.

Rusty Stumps Scale Models announces another run of their rendition of the Silver Plume Store built around 1890, which is still standing in Silver Plume, Colorado. If you are doing Western it will fit right in but it is still in style in the East. This laser cut kit is easy to assemble but offers some interesting modeling techniques. The store interior is empty, but could easily be modeled with counters and cabinets to make it just about any kind of store you would like it to be. It has a small footprint, 2-3/4" wide by 5-3/4" deep. Also included a number of our fine resin detail castings. All you'll need is some paint, glue and a few evenings to assemble.

S-scale Stanton Drive

(updated)

Web Site

Smoky Mountain Model Works announced that they no longer sell the S-scale Stanton Drives. You should now be able to order them through your dealer, or from NorthWest Short Line directly (NWSL has made this product a regular item instead of a special-order one). The Stanton Drive encapsulates both the motor and the gears, all within the space of the truck. This allows for easy installation, and leaves the interior of the locomotive free for super-detailing, and installation of DCC decoders, speakers, or battery-powered solutions. The Stanton Drive can be used with DCC. Several wheelbases, wheel sizes, wheel thicknesses (code 87 and 110), and both powered and non-powered versions are available. See the NWSL web site for the complete listing. Each Stanton Drive has a stall current of 0.85 amps, so use one DCC decoder for each unit, or a 2+ amp decoder for two.

Modular Industrial Low-relief Structure Kit

(new)

e-mail

Milepost 169 announces the availability of the Modular Industrial Low-relief Structure and Floor option kits. This was the kit people worked on at the 2016 NASG hands-on clinic. Designed and produced exclusively for Milepost 169 by Monster Model Works, this base kit produces a two-story curtain-wall industrial structure featuring beautifully detailed brick walls and concrete pillars floors and cornice. The low-relief design makes this structure perfect for adding traffic to your layout. It is also perfect for creating a view block. Either way, it will add interest and traffic in a compact space. The light-weight, sturdy construction of the industrial building is perfect for modular layouts as well. The model is based on an architectural design style that has been around since 1905 and is still common all over North America. The pillars represent a reinforced concrete construction that supports multiple floors. The buildings were faced with brick "curtains" which gave a strong industrial look. However those curtains did not add to the structural strength of the building. As with the prototype, the base kit produces a solid three-story structure that can be used as-is or you can add additional floors with the floor kit. The symmetry of the design also lends itself to creating even larger structures by combining kits for added length, depth, height. Construction of the kit requires no special tools or experience. A beginner will be able to build a structure they will be proud of. The flexible design of the kit makes it a perfect canvas for an experienced model builder to create a craftsman level model. The two story base kit retails for $79.99, and the additional floor kits are $29.99 each, available from Milepost 169. Contact Ken Zieska at mhry19 @ gmail.com for more information (no web site).
